What to expect/Do - for the newbie

Just got a new roomie that's just starting R-HyperCVAD, and it made me realize I should create a common list of things to do/expect - without having to read through all my entries... These are related to my experiences, and yours may differ.

- Keep a list of all the meds that you're taking - including the dosages - with you at all times. If you have to go to a hospital or a doctor for a fever, etc, they won't know what you're going through, so you'll have to tell them.

- Change your cell phone's screen to be an ICE message (In Case of Emergency). List your doctor, that you're going through chemo, etc.

- Hickman Care (while showering) - major thanks to Linda!!: When you're in the hospital, they make this 'window' to place over your Hickman site to keep it dry while you shower. At home, a much easier solution than making the window is to use Glad Press and Seal, cut to a larger size then your dressing (I pull off a section, and have to trim about 4 inches off the one side) press it to your chest, around the dressing, and then tape over the edges. Takes about 2 mintues tops (probably less), and it's MUCH easier to me than making the window.
- also if you're going to be doing activities that make you perspire (bike riding, running, etc), make sure your doctor/pharmacist sets you up with 2 dressing changes per week. Otherwise it just becomes too loose.

- I felt a bit nauseaus the first day or two after chemo. Don't hold out on taking the anti nausea pills - take them when you start to get the feeling. I never got sick, but by delaying the taking of the pills, I only prolonged a not-so-pleasant-feeling.

- You'll probably start losing your hair (head and facial) about 2 weeks out from your A cycle chemo. My choice was to shave immediately. I've heard you can have discomfort if you don't, and I didn't want to go 'spotty'. My other choice was to have some fun with it - try some new 'dos', take pics, etc. Likewise with any facial hair. I'm a guy and it didn't matter that much, for the ladies, I understand it's more traumatic, but there are usually resources available to you - make sure you talk to your onc or the hospital you're being treated at.
- oh, it doesn't completely stop growing, you'll still have to shave once in a while - which is annoying - either leave all the way, or come back!

- Keep up with the mouth care - especially on the 'B' cycle. Do the mouth rinses, etc. Sores can set in, and they're annoying - prevent them.

- To date, the administration of either cycle has not been that bad for me. Meaning, in the hospital, when getting treatment, I generally feel quite fine. (The worst was hickups during my first 'B' cycle.) The nadir (7-10 days after chemo ends), is when you have to watch. The 'A' cycle has been fine so far, the 'B' cycle is the one to watch out for. It causes your counts to drop more - and I've heard this from others. Be ready for neutropenic fever, which simply involves a trip to the ER, and possible a stay for a few days. If you know about it up front, expect it, and plan for it - it's really not a bid deal. Don't be afraid of it, they know what to do.

- DON'T BE AFRAID OF A BLOOD TRANSFUSION. I got 6 pints over a week, and 2 units of platelets. It may be part of your treatment. If your body needs it, you'll get it, and your counts will go back up. No need to be concerned - they test the heck out of the blood, irradiate it, etc. etc....

- I have been able to work while in the hospital (I work in computers so I do lot's of e-mail, computer based work, conf calls, etc - and I can do all that remotely). I've been able to go back to the office the day after chemo - and feel fine. Maybe a little out of it, but depending on your job, somehow all the work activity doesn't allow you to feel out of it - which is a good thing! (Works for me.) If you feel tired, you need to cut back.

- Low HGB (hemoglobin) counts are the thing that affected me most - from a physical standpoint. I noticed it when walking across NYC for meetings, or when climbing stairs in Penn station or subways. Watch your HGB counts and your activity. When excercising, use a heart monitor, as since you have less oxygen in your blood, your heart has to work harder to supply oxygen to your muscles. Meaning, if you work out as hard as you did before, your heart may be working WAY too hard. Polar sells some great ones cheap. You can get them at Dicks Sporting Goods (dickssportinggood.com) or Performance Bicycle (performancebike.com) - no affiliation to either....

- Colonoscopies are not that bad! You get sedated before, and the next thing you know you're in the recovery room. The worst part is not eating the day prior, and having to take something that will 'clean you out'. A prostate exam is far worse (IMHO).

I'll add to this as things come to me - or please send me comments if there are things I'm missing.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Aug. 27, 2013) – It’s not unusual for cameras to follow Patrick Dempsey’s every move, be it in his “day job” as an actor, his personal life or his racing pursuits.

However, keen observers may have noticed more cameras than usual following his Dempsey Del Piero Racing team through the early stages of the 2013 American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón season. In fact, the cameras started rolling in 2012, when the Hollywood star competed in both the ALMS and the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series.

Beginning at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Wednesday, the footage captured by those cameras will be featured in a four-part documentary series on Discovery’s Velocity television network entitled “Patrick Dempsey: Racing Le Mans.” The documentary focuses on Dempsey’s preparation and efforts to race in the 90th 24 Hours of Le Mans this past June.

“Racing is my true passion, and taking on Le Mans [is] the biggest challenge of my life so far,” Dempsey said. “Le Mans pushes both driver and machine to the absolute brink, testing focus, skill and endurance unlike any other event in the world. Just getting to Le Mans is almost as challenging as the race itself. This project reflects a 360-degree view of the entire race process – including all the ups and downs along the way.”

The documentary chronicles Dempsey’s 2012 Rolex Series exploits and his debut season in the ALMS last year, when his Dempsey Racing team fielded a Lola B12/87 in the P2 class. It also follows the team’s offseason switch to the ALMS GT Challenge class and the No. 27 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, and culminates with Dempsey sharing the No. 77 Dempsey Del Piero-Proton Porsche 911 GT3 RSR with co-drivers Joe Foster and Patrick Long at Le Mans.

Timepiece Experts From Time and Gems Offer Tips on How to Choose a Rolex Watch Online
Time and Gems: Shopping online for luxury timepieces is no easy feat, hence the experts at Time and Gems wish to help online shoppers make the right decision.
Mens Rolex White Gold Pave Dial Daytona at Time and Gems
Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) August 30, 2013

watches The timepiece experts at Time and Gems wish to impart much needed advice and knowledge upon online shoppers and teach them a thing or two about shopping for pre-used Rolex watches online.

high quality replica watches Be it shopping at Time and Gems or through other online retailers, buyers should pay attention to several main things when choosing a pre-owned Rolex watch. One of the main hindrances to shopping online is the inability for the buyer to feel, examine and try on the watch. That is why several other measures have to be taken into account to protect oneself from fraud. Here are some shopping tips by Time and Gems’ expert jewelers and watch professionals.

high quality replica watches 1.    Ensure That It Comes With a Warranty
This is one of the most important things to look out for. When a pre-used Rolex watch does not come with a warranty, the buyer should practice caution and steer clear from it. The same can be said of retailers who offer a lower rate for watches by removing the warranty. No matter what, buyers need to insist on a warranty to protect themselves and the watch. Time and Gems value honesty and always put quality above all else and offer a comprehensive two-year warranty on all Rolex watches sold through them. Should the Rolex watch stop working for whatever reason, or if it meets with irregular wear and tear, buyers are welcome to ship it back to Time and Gems’s logistics warehouse in Los Angeles for either an exchange or complimentary fix.

top brand watches 2.    Ensure That There Is a Return & Exchange Policy
Usually when one shops online, one will not know exactly what the item feels like until after receiving it. There are times when the buyer is disappointed with the item as it does not look like what was pictured on the website. Other times, the item may arrived damaged. If a retailer has a flexible return and exchange policy in place, buyers need not worry about issues such as these. All they need to do is to contact one of the retailer’s customer representatives and request for a return or exchange. Time and Gems gladly offer a return and exchange policy with every purchase of a pre-used Rolex watch.

high quality swiss replica watches 3.    Ensure That There Is Free Shipping & Insurance
Rolex watches generally cost thousands of dollars and customers should enjoy free shipping with their expensive purchase. Additionally, because the watches will be shipped, often times traveling thousands of miles, it is important that it is insured to ensure that should theft or damage occur, the buyer does not need to worry about anything. Time and Gems proudly offers free shipping to all domestic and international addresses via UPS Priority Shipping. Additionally, all shipments are insured for peace of mind.

copy watches One of the pre-used Rolex watches on sale is the Men's Rolex Stainless Steel Black Dial Daytona (Item #5128) Price: $14,045
(Bank Wire Price: $12,640)
This leaves the buyer a total of $1405 should the buyer opt to pay via bank wire.

For more tips on how to shop for pre-used Rolex watches, or to find out what else is on sale through Time and Gems, call them at 1-888-658-5595 or head to http://www.timeandgems.com .

Admiration lingers for Bo Xilai in China's Chongqing
Chongqing, where Bo Xilai used to be leader, is one of China's great cities
Bo Xilai scandal
Will leaders regret Bo's fall?
Profile: Bo Xilai
Transparency or theatre?
Key players
In a great, sweeping, snaking curve, the Yangtze river flows wide and fast through the city of Chongqing. Murky and polluted, full of dangerous undercurrents, its waters mix with the Jialing river. The point at which the two rivers meet is where Chongqing's skyscrapers rise, on a finger of land surrounded by water, like an inland Manhattan.

tiffany Chongqing is one of China's great cities, a river port filled with giant factories, the hub for a region of 30 million people. It was once a wartime capital, bombed by the Japanese. More recently riddled with mafia gangs, known for crime and corruption, the city has played a part in many of China's political dramas. It's here where you have to come to understand the rise, and now the fall, of Bo Xilai.

tiffany & co The catalyst for his demise was the murder, in Chongqing almost two years ago, of Neil Heywood. Mr Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, has already been convicted of that crime. She'd fallen out with her British business partner over their business deals and poisoned him. The killing was kept secret until Mr Bo's police chief fled to the US consulate in nearby Chengdu, exposing the scandal.

wholesale tiffany jewelry Bo Xilai's own trial in August riveted millions of Chinese. One of the most recognisable and popular politicians in China, he was one of the Communist Party's rising stars. His father had a prominent part in China's revolution. That makes Bo Xilai a Communist Party "princeling", so powerful many believed him almost untouchable.

Love for Bo

cheap tiffany & co The court hearings were filled with revelations of infidelity and corruption in Mr Bo's family. There were photos of a secret villa in the south of France. Mr Bo didn't accept the charges meekly as most officials would. He called his wife "crazy", and his former police chief a "liar" for alleging he'd tried to cover up her crime.

Damian Grammaticas explains why Bo Xilai is likely to receive a long jail sentence

tiffany and co outlet For the Communist Party it was an unedifying, damaging spectacle. But the party wants people to believe it is serious about tackling corruption and this case demonstrates how nobody is above the law, how the courts show no favour to the party's elites. But in Chongqing many believe it was really about eliminating Bo Xilai as a political force.

tiffany jewelry outlet The centre of Chongqing is a pedestrianised shopping zone, now ringed with giant glass tower blocks gleaming in the sunlight. The area is full of brand new designer boutiques, names like Chanel and Tiffany & Co. Chinese families stroll past, snapping photos on their brand-new smartphones.

Bo Xilai was transforming Chongqing. As the local Communist Party boss, he oversaw its rise to become one of the fastest growing economic regions of China. He had a reputation as a decisive, effective leader, and despite his downfall, he's still admired in the city.

Zhang Anhao, a farmer who does part-time labouring jobs in the city, told me: "In Chongqing 80% of us approved of him. Honestly, all the ordinary people and low-level officials supported him. The 20% who didn't were corrupt officials, or thieves and robbers, because Bo cracked down on them. He was good at his job. He was making Chongqing a better place. What we need are more officials like him."

As he spoke, a woman walking past chimed in: "Chongqing people love Bo Xilai. Some officials just care about keeping their bosses happy. But Bo Xilai worked for the people. Who doesn't support him in Chongqing?"

Genuinely popular

The narrow streets that run uphill from Chongqing's riverside docks are crowded. Jostling their way through the throng are the city's famous porters, the bang bang men. From wooden poles balanced on their shoulders hang heavy loads, which they lug up and down the alleyways. Sweating and straining, they carry goods from the wholesalers to shops in the city.

The bang bang men liked Bo Xilai because he was addressing their needs. He was building cheap housing, tackling the mafia gangs, cleaning up crime and corruption, making the streets safer. He consciously appealed to those disillusioned by the country's huge inequalities, Chinese who feel most Communist officials don't care for the poor.

Mr Bo was admired for the way he cleaned up crime and corruption

"I think there must be a reason why he was arrested. But, as a politician, he was talented. He was making our city a safer place," said one bang bang man. Another added, "I don't know if he was corrupt, but we hope he can be released, and can come back to keep helping Chongqing develop."

Bo Xilai was genuinely popular in a way that other Communist Party politicians in China rarely are. He was flamboyant and confident, building his own powerbase of supporters outside the party and that may be why others in the leadership viewed him as a threat.

"Mr Bo actually had charisma, had revolutionary lineage and also had a political programme that had national appeal, which is a very potent combination in the Chinese system," says Professor Dali Yang of the University of Chicago.

"Most Chinese leaders are very bland, take their time, hide their views," explains Prof Yang. "Not Mr Bo, he had a strong policy platform emphasising anti-crime, egalitarianism and so on, while pushing the local economy forward very rapidly. So I'm pretty sure his fall is welcome to some members of the elite, but at the same time it's a deep loss for the people who supported him."

Bo Xilai's supporters in Chongqing certainly feel he has been brought down less because of any corruption on his own part, more because of rivalries among China's communist elites.

"Who isn't corrupt? I ask you which government official is not corrupt? All officials are corrupt. Bo was no different," I was told.

And one bang bang man, his shirt tied round his waist, was even more vocal: "It's clear he's not been treated fairly! What's happened to Secretary Bo isn't fair! It was a political power struggle that brought him down. Of course Secretary Bo was good."

Whatever Bo Xilai's sins, he's still admired by his supporters, particularly the poor and those who yearn for a more egalitarian China. They believe China's other elites are even more corrupt than Mr Bo may have been, more unaccountable, more distant. Bo Xilai at least able was to connect with ordinary people, to convince them he cared, so there's still affection for him.

watches By Silke Koltrowitz

buy discount watches ZURICH (Reuters) - Don't expect your $10,000 wristwatch to be surfing the Web or calling your broker any time soon.

replica watches High-end Swiss watchmakers seem agreed that their concept of timeless luxury does not sit well with the "gadget" appeal of smartwatches.

replica watches "A smartwatch is programmed to become obsolete," Jean-Claude Biver, chairman of luxury watchmaker Hublot, told Reuters.

Cheap Rolex Watches "How could I mix Hublot with something made for obsolescence? It's impossible," said Biver, who added he had rebuffed a big technology group which wanted to explore future projects.

buy discount watches Technology firms like Sony, Samsung and Qualcomm have already launched smartwatches which can replicate smartphones in making calls, accessing the web and running apps.

Technology heavyweights Apple Inc and Google Inc have also shown tentative signs of interest in developing the devices, with Apple launching an iWatch trademark in Japan this year.

Smartwatch shipments are expected to reach 36 million by 2018, compared with just 1 million this year, according to Juniper Research, and Credit Suisse analysts see the market for wearable technology, including smartwatches, interactive glasses and monitors, growing to over $42 billion in the next three to five years.

But luxury watchmakers, whose time pieces sell for anything from 3,000 to 50,000 Swiss francs ($3,500 to $55,000) and often much more, are lukewarm about launching crossover products which could dilute their brand appeal.

"I'm not discounting it," said Johann Rupert, controlling shareholder of luxury goods group Richemont.

"But I don't think it's going to have a big impact on classical watches. Especially for men, it's the only jewelry they can wear."

UPHILL BATTLE

Analysts said smartwatches face an uphill battle to become mainstream devices and point to the fact that many can only be used as an accessory in conjunction with a smartphone.

"We do not believe smartwatches will become a substitute to luxury watches and early models do not appear to have breakthrough innovations," Citi analysts said in a note.

They estimate the market for smartwatches at about $6 billion out of a total of $60 billion for all watches.

LVMH's biggest watch brand, TAG Heuer, said this week it had created a one-off smartwatch for members of the Oracle sailing team that won the America's Cup on Wednesday.

But the brand's diversification and innovation director Thomas Houlon told Reuters TAG Heuer did not see a business case for making gadgets. "What makes Swiss watches so exciting is that they're mechanical."

Industry experts say Swatch Group, with its entry-price Swatch and Tissot brands that are roughly in the same price category as $300 smartwatches, might be interested in entering the smartwatch market.

"I'm sure Nick Hayek has something up his sleeve, no pun intended," Rupert said.

Asked for comment, Swatch CEO Nick Hayek said in an emailed statement his company had worked on interactive watches for years and already was the No.1 in touch technology for watches.

In a magazine interview in May, he said Swatch Group was helping Apple to master challenges for the iWatch, such as reducing power consumption and making curved touch screens, but also stressed he saw the future of Swiss watchmaking in mechanical watches rather than in smartwatches.

Citi analysts said they believed Swatch was keeping a close eye on smartwatch developments and could react promptly given its previous successes in the field. "Technology has always been an intrinsic part of Swatch Group's lower priced brands."

SHARED BENEFITS

Biver said the tech firm that contacted Hublot wanted to benefit from its knowhow and distribution network.

"We have received offers and we sat down a few times with one of the two big tech groups...but we declined," he said in a telephone interview on Thursday.

"They came to us because we are a watch brand for young people."

Hublot, known for its porthole-shaped watches with rubber straps, has just signed a partnership deal with the Paris Saint-Germain soccer team as it seeks to reach tomorrow's customers via a sport not commonly sponsored by luxury watch brands.

Biver said the rise of smartwatches might actually help makers of luxury watches.

"If young people get used to read information on their wrists instead of only on their phone, that will prepare them to one day also wear a watch."

Citi analysts said "new wearable technology should positively introduce 'arm candy' to a younger demographic and can ultimately increase adoption of fashion watches". ($1 = 0.9111 Swiss francs)

Thursday's Top Upgrades (and Downgrades) By TMFDitty | Motley Fool  –  Thu, Sep 26, 2013 3:40 PM EDT
RELATED QUOTES Symbol Price Change DMND 20.86 -0.26 NILE 39.77 +0.43 IPI 16.00 -0.2100

This series, brought to you by Yahoo! Finance, looks at which upgrades and downgrades make sense, and which ones investors should act on. Today, our headlines feature new buy ratings for
Diamond Foods
(DMND)
and
Blue Nile
(NILE)
-- but...

Not for Intrepid Potash

Might as well get the bad news out of the way first, and with its shares down 1.5% in midday trading, today does look likely to be a bad day for shareholders of
Intrepid Potash
(IPI)
. StreetInsider.com is reporting today that BMO Capital just downgraded the stock to "underperform," even as it left its price target unchanged at $11 a share.

tiffany rings
Why downgrade now, after the stock's already lost 25% of its value over the past year? Simply put: There's no time like the present.

stores sell tiffany jewelry
You see, Intrepid Potash shares have experienced a recent surge from prices that began, in early August, very near to BMO's target price. Trading just shy of $16 today, the shares cost more than 16 times trailing earnings -- which may not
sound
expensive, but is, and for two reasons:

tiffany outlet online
First, those earnings are expected to decline at Intrepid Potash. Most analysts agree the company is likely to experience about a 5% annual rate of profits shrinkage over the next five years. Second, even the profits Intrepid Potash currently reports as "earnings" may not be worth as much as you think. Despite reporting GAAP profits of $74 million over the past 12 months, Intrepid Potash actually experienced negative free cash flow of about $147 million. FCF was negative last year as well, and in truth, it's been about
five
years since the last time Intrepid Potash produced real free cash flow of close to the $74 million in GAAP profits it's claiming today.

tiffany jewelry outlet
Long story short, the stock's not as cheap as it looks. BMO is right to recommend selling it. So let's turn now to a couple of stocks that Wall Street believes
are
worth
more
than they now cost. We'll begin with:

Blue Nile

...which just caught an initiation of coverage from B. Riley & Co. Riley thinks the stock, currently at $41 and change, will soon be worth $49 a share, and recommends buying it. I think they may be right.

Priced at 54.5 times earnings today, Blue Nile doesn't look cheap on the surface -- not even with a growth rate projected at "only" 21%. What's key here is that Blue Nile is one of those diamonds in the rough that generate more cash profit than they're allowed to report as "net income" under GAAP. To be precise, Blue Nile generated $22.9 million in positive free cash flow over the past 12 months, even as it reported "earning" only $9.7 million.

That works out to a price-to-free cash flow ratio of only 22.7, or an even more attractive enterprise value-to-free cash flow ratio of 19.7. (
Enterprise value
gives a company credit for any extra cash it has on hand, by deducting the value of that cash, minus any debt, from the market cap.)

Assuming Blue Nile achieves the 21% growth rate that Wall Street is giving it credit for, I think the stock's cheap enough to buy, and I think B. Riley is right to recommend it.

Diamond Foods -- less than sparkly

In contrast, I'm less enthralled with Diamond Foods, which despite being upgraded to "buy" at BB&T Capital Markets this morning, looks somewhat less than gem-quality to me.

Diamond's not currently profitable under GAAP accounting standards, although it does produce positive free cash flow -- about $10 million over the past year. If you ask me, though, that's still far too little cash to justify the stock's heady $553 million market cap -- or the $1.07 billion the enterprise is valued at, with debt included.

Adding to the reasons for caution, most analysts seem to have this food products stock pegged for just 7% annual growth over the next five years. (S&P Capital IQ is a bit more optimistic, quoting its analysts as projecting 12% growth, versus the 7% figure shown on Yahoo! Finance.) Whichever number you believe, though, it's not nearly fast-enough growth to support a 55 times price-to-free cash flow ratio, or the more than 100 times multiple you get when calculating Diamond's enterprise value.

My take: Diamond Foods may be valued like a
Tiffany
-- but the
stock's 100% pure cubic zirconium.

Moreau welcomes new exhibits

The Saint Mary’s College Moreau Center for the Arts unveiled three new exhibits on Friday, Oct. 11. The Hammes , Sister Rosaire and Little Theater galleries welcomed Lawrence Sumulong , Shawne Major and Ann Tarantino to their respective walls. cheap tiffany & co
Tiffany Bidler , assistant professor of art and directory of the galleries, said Sumulong , a photographer based out of New York, was an ideal choice in her quest for “resonance” in the gallery. tiffany silver
Sumulong’s multimedia creation, “From the Prison House,” documents the experiences of Filipino Muslim female domestic workers, Bidler said.
“There are many departments, professors and students on campus who are interested in the experiences of women in a global context and so I thought his work would find an audience at Saint Mary’s,” Bidler said.
The black and white slideshow features photos taken at the Salam Compound, a walled community of displaced Filipino Muslims. In an effort to improve the living conditions of Muslims in the Philippines, the Libyan government bought the land for the compound in Tandang Sora , Quezon City in the 1970s , Bidler said.
“Students who have taken courses in Global Studies or Gender and Women’s Studies — or any course that focused on issues of gender, religion and social justice — would appreciate Lawrence Sumulong’s concern with the difficulties faced by migrant workers and his desire to use his artistic abilities to help us hear the voices of these women,” Bidler said.
Sumulong also showed images from a diary that a Filipino domestic worker had kept while wrongfully imprisoned in Saudi Arabia. While the woman did not live in the Salam Compound, her experience reflected that of many female domestic workers who did.
Notre Dame senior Ryan Shea said he saw the exhibit and considered it “very bleak.”
Shea said he was deeply moved by the numerous prayers the prisoner had written in her diary entries. The piece served as a way to humanize the unseen and oppressed women, Shea said.
“These prisoners are not a visible part of our lives and thus easy to forget about,” Shea said. “Obviously, it was quite dark.”
The exhibits of Major and Tarantino’s pieces were more introspective, Bidler said.
“Sumulong’s photographs have a meditative quality and the lines of writing he photographs formally resonates with the lines and threads in the work of Tarantino and Major,” Bidler said.
Tarantino said her work focuses on “lonely figures in unknown landscapes, underwater creatures, unknowable beings, neural networks, and maps of cities — real and invented.”
Bidler said Tarantino establishes a systematic theme in the delicate patterning of nervous tissue, emotional ties found in contemporary social networks and the elaborate web of parasitic and symbiotic relationships required to maintain healthy ecosystems.
Poured ink is blown through a straw to create intricate patterns on the gallery’s white walls, Bidler said. Tarantino is also known to use an air compressor to propel paint depending on what surface she is painting.
“Tarantino creates site-specific wall drawings that are temporary and ephemeral,” Bidler said.
Tarantino, an assistant art professor at Pennsylvania State University was able to establish a personal connection with students while painting her piece on the surface of the gallery’s walls.
“Ann Tarantino came to campus to create her wall painting and she spent time talking to students informally and answering questions about her process. It was really wonderful to have her here as a resource for our students,” Bidler said. “We have courses in fibers, painting and photography in the art department and one of the charges of the gallery is to expose students to different artistic practices.”
Major said she is interested in how the perception of reality is affected by dreams, memory, superstition, religion, bias, prejudice and fear. Major wove cheap plastic items together to create various wall hangings in her exhibit.
â€œMy mixed-media works refer to the overlay of belief systems created by the individual to piece together their personal paradigm,” Major said.
Major said she uses various objects and even “junk” to create a metaphorical image of how people take in information and to challenge traditional ideas about art.
â€œMy vocabulary — a combination of kisch , ersatz and craft materials, junk and personal objects — is re-aesthetisized into accumulated forms that serve as metaphors for the build-up, organization and assimilation of information,” Major said. “The vernacular, as a language of objects indigenous to my class and culture is used here to subvert the hierarchy of art.”
The fact that the mass-produced, synthetic materials that make up her pseudo-tapestries deliberately aim to undermine the elitism associated with handcrafted objects, Major said.
Bidler said the way Major uses found objects in her work imparts a sense of the objects being inherited.
“Shawne Major works with fibers and found objects. Her work emphasizes materiality and provides a sense of permanence, they have the feeling of inherited objects,” Bidler said.
Bidler said the works of both Tarantino and Major, though different, are concerned with memory and information.
“I enjoy the complexity of her work and the way the small accumulated objects she embeds in the piece trigger personal memories and associations,” Bidler said. “Ann Tarantino and Shawne Major are both interested in systems, networks, memory and information but these interests are manifested in really different ways in their work. “
Bidler said all three of the exhibits will be on display until Nov.1 .

NEW MILFORD -- Since January, the Faith Preparatory School cafeteria has been the place where people driven from their New York City homes by Superstorm Sandy met Sunday afternoons to eat, give thanks and share stories of survival.

As the one-year anniversary of the devastating storm drew near, fewer of those living in the mobile homes on the Faith Church property have stopped by. This past week, not even 10 showed up.

"It started in the last couple of months," said Dennis Klaus , a 62-year-old former Brooklyn, N.Y., resident. "People know everybody's stories. They don't want their kids to always be known as storm victims and they are ready to move on."

As of the end of the year, they will be moving on. The town will not extend the agreement with the church and the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which supplied the temporary housing for the 14 families from Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens displaced by the superstorm.

"The arrangement with the town of New Milford and the state of Connecticut was that because of the sanitary issues, such as the septic system, this was a temporary arrangement and all the units needed to be vacated by Dec. 31," said John Hodge , a church member and operations director of the foundation, which is named for his cousin, a New York City firefighter who was killed at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

"We're determined to live up to our agreement with the town," Hodge said. "New Milford has been fantastic and did what New York would not do -- took these people in."

Many of the evacuees have already found other places to live. Some, like Meaghan Wentland , are planning to return to their former homes, which are in the process of being rebuilt. But a majority of the families want to stay in New Milford, Hodge said.

Victoria Ledeneva , her husband Valeriy Kalashnikov , and their two sons, Alex, 6, and Ivan, 7, will be among the half-dozen or so who will be moving, along with their trailers, to the Candle Hill-North Mobile Home Park at the other end of New Milford.

Ledeneva had passed the bar exam and just started working for a lawyer in Brooklyn when the monster storm drove the family from their home in the Midland Beach section of Staten Island. She lost that job, but has since established her own practice in Brooklyn and commutes there twice a week.

"We feel like we are free from city problems here," Ledeneva said. "Even though we lost everything, it is better for us to be here."

But for a few, like Klaus and Maryann Daino , a 62-year-old ex-Staten Islander who met and started a relationship after coming to New Milford, the future is clouded by uncertainty.

"As of the 31st, I'm going to be homeless," she said.

She and Klaus hope to find temporary lodging, perhaps as caretakers, until they can get their respective finances in order and qualify for a mortgage that will allow them to buy their own home. Like some other Sandy refugees, they would like it to be in Connecticut.

"We love Connecticut," Klaus said. "People here have been incredible to us, and the church has been phenomenal. We'd like to give something back."

Just before Christmas, storm survivors began moving into the 14-foot -by-48-foot mobile homes, provided by the foundation and located on a four-acre parcel off Route 7 that is part of the Faith Church campus.

But even in Connecticut, some have been unable to escape the problems generated by Sandy.

Wentland's mother is a security guard in New York City, staying with friends during the week and returning to New Milford on weekends. She was swindled out of $14,000 by an unscrupulous contractor who was supposed to repair her house, but never finished the job.

Volunteers, including Habitat for Humanity , stepped in, and Wentland, who has an 18-month-old son, hopes it will be finished by December.

Eventually, she said she would like to return to Connecticut, where she and her boyfriend, who works in Windsor, can raise their child.

"We've made real good friends here, and I plan on coming back," she said.

Over the past 10 months, many evacuees have become part of the church community, worshipping there on Sunday and enrolling their children in the school, while working to reestablish the lives disrupted by the storm.

But as time has gone by, they said they have grown tired of being interviewed by newspapers and television stations, especially in the past few weeks, as the anniversary of the superstorm was approaching.

On Monday, a "No Trespassing" was put up outside the trailers.

"You just get tired of baring your soul," Klaus said.

Hodge said assistance is still needed to find temporary housing for people like Klaus and Daino until they can find permanent homes. He can be reached at hodgepodgenf@gmail.com

timberland

timberland fashion boots Red Wing Shoes has been a well-known brand for over a century especially among those who require the highest quality work boots. For those who do not conduct the sort of work that requires work boots, however, the brand may be more familiar due to the oxfords, chukkas, and the like that are sold  as the Red Wing Heritage Collection in partnership with retailers such as Brooks Brothers, Nordstrom’s, and J. Crew.

timberland boots on sale Joe Topinka brought his size 15 feet to the Minnesota-based shoe company in May of 2008 as the company’s first ever chief information officer. (Foot size is listed on employees’ business cards.) Recognizing the opportunity to leverage technology more creatively to market and sell Red Wing Shoes’ products, Topinka pushed the organization to develop a more creative multichannel commerce strategy. He made the case so effectively that in recent months, he was given responsibility for multichannel commerce for the entire company, taking on a rare but quite logical CIO-plus role that other business-to-consumer companies will likely adopt in the future.

timberland boot outlet Peter High: Joe, can you describe Red Wing Shoes’ business?

Joe Topinka, CIO & VP Multichannel Commerce at Red Wing Shoes

timberland fashion boots Joe Topinka: Red Wing Shoes is an iconic, 108 year old footwear manufacturer and retailer. The company has maintained its roots in the city by the same name where it was founded in 1905. Red Wing Shoes operates in over 100 countries, with global manufacturing anchored in Red Wing, MN. For over a century, Red Wing’s purpose-built footwear has been at the spearhead of innovation and the standard of excellence for work footwear.

PH: You joined the company as CIO over five and a half years ago, and in the past year, you added the role of Vice President of Multichannel Marketing to your responsibilities. Please describe each of those roles, and the logic of having a single executive responsible for each.

JT: As the first CIO at Red Wing Shoes in its 100+ years of operation, I was hired by the company’s President to help drive strategic objectives. Red Wing was embarking on a global growth initiative and the executive team had the foresight to recognize that business technology would be strategically critical to achieving future growth plans.

My first challenge was putting IT on the map within the company so that we could then help propel the company forward. There was a hunger both within the IT organization, and in the company’s business units, to raise our capabilities to a new level. To transform the IT group into true business partners within the company, I implemented an IT Business Partner program.

The objective was to bridge the chasm between business units and IT to the point that their goals would be virtually intertwined. The new program earned our IT team the trust and confidence of the various business unit leaders, and was crucial to the IT department’s integration into the company’s strategic planning process. Up to that point in our history, this had been a missing link at Red Wing, as is still the case in many companies today.

As part of our IT Business Partner program, we committed ourselves to spending time meeting with external customers. By doing so, we gleaned valuable insight into how customers use our products and services. By this I mean everything from how they experienced our technology when purchasing to how our footwear is used in the real world. This external customer focus helped to surface many previously undiscovered requirements, confirming why I believe so strongly in the value of IT-led field research.

From these findings we developed investment roadmaps for our supply chain organization, our B2B, and our consumer-based businesses. Ultimately, this purposeful collaboration with internal partner business units, and the focus on external customers, helped us articulate a bold, new way forward for the company; culminating in board funding of a comprehensive, multichannel commerce initiative.

We also focused on achieving a level of transparency that helped to demystify IT to the rest of the organization. We executed three tactics to accomplish this. First, we helped end-users understand their role in requesting projects. The key to this is helping requestors appreciate that their ideas have to compete with other great ideas from around the company. The more clearly they can demonstrate their ideas top- or bottom-line benefits, the more likely it would be to win the competition for finite resources, and be taken on as a project. Second, we exposed the decision criteria for projects. We share how each proposal stacks up relative to all the others, which projects are funded, which aren’t, and why. And finally, we make all the details of active projects available to employees via our Intranet. Everyone in the firm can easily see the IT department’s projects, schedules, status reports and more. All three of these approaches streamlined our investment process, and created transparency, resulting in engagement and ownership by end-users, all while reinforcing IT trust and credibility.

I was asked to lead this effort primarily because the organization now looks at IT as just another business unit, rather than a mere order-taker. I’m convinced that this enhanced regard is the result of our IT Business Partner program. Their bi-lingual ability to speak both the language of business, and that of IT, is at the core of many great changes at Red Wing Shoes, and has been instrumental to our e-commerce initiative. I played a very active role in helping to develop our foray into the multichannel world by working closely with the business unit leaders responsible for our retail bricks and mortar enterprise and our largest wholesale businesses. Being so involved with all aspects of the investment program, I was asked to present the investment to our board; something I couldn’t have done without the collaboration with partner business units or the IT group’s interactions with external customers.

German yields near record lows as EU mulls harsher Russia sanctions

links of london * Any tougher Russia sanctions seen hitting German growth * Spanish yields hit record lows as ECB seen supporting economy * Lower-rated euro zone bond yields flat to lower (Updates with Spanish yields hitting new lows, fresh quote) By Emelia Sithole-Matarise and Marius Zaharia LONDON, July 23 (Reuters) - German bond yields fell back towards record lows on Wednesday as worries over the threat of tougher EU sanctions on Russia and their potential impact on the euro zone's feeble economic growth underpinned demand for Bunds.

links of london wholesale Growth concerns lead to expectations that the European Central Bank would act to support the economy if needed, boosting demand for high-yielding assets as well and pushing 10-year Spanish yields to new record lows.

links of london sale The European Union threatened Russia on Tuesday with harsher sanctions over Ukraine that could inflict wider damage on its economy following the downing of a Malaysian airliner, but it delayed action for a few days.

Links The sanctions could hit the European economy as well, with Germany most at risk given its strong trade links with Russia.

links of london wholesale German 10-year yields fell 3 basis points to 1.147 percent , not far from the record low of 1.126 percent hit at the height of the euro zone debt crisis in mid-2012. Other top-rated euro zone bond yields were down by a similar amount.

links of london outlet "The market remains nervous because of the geopolitical environment and Bunds look well underpinned at this juncture," said Nick Stamenkovic, a strategist at RIA Capital Markets.

"The EU are talking tough but they are not taking any further action imminently. But clearly if the situation deteriorates further between Russia and the EU then further sanctions are possible and that would have ramifications for the euro area economy, especially Germany." Market participants also expect some of the hefty bond redemptions and coupon repayments, estimated at over 40 billion euros, due at the end of the month from Spain and Italy keep supporting euro zone bonds.

Italian 10-year yields fell 4 bps lower at 2.74 percent while Spanish equivalents hit a new record low at 2.547 percent.

Underpinning demand for high-yielding assets, minutes from this month's Bank of England meeting showed policymakers remained concerned that raising rates too early might hurt the economy.

"The BoE is seen as the most likely to hike rates at some point of the top three central banks, so the market is probably relieved that they remain relaxed," said Alan McQuaid, chief economist at Merrion Stockbrokers.

MONEY MARKETS Yields on shorter-dated euro zone bonds were also a touch lower. Some market strategists had expected a fall in spare cash in the banking system as banks repay a bumper 21 billion euros in emergency loans to the ECB and a lower-than forecast take-up of one-week loans to push money market rates and short-term bonds yields higher.

Excess liquidity was expected to fall below 100 billion euros for the first time since May. However, there was little sign of stress.

Other strategists said short-term yields and money market rates were likely to remain subdued as excess liquidity was set to get a boost in September when the ECB offers banks a fresh round of cheap four-year loans.

"The fact that there's a possibility of a huge rise in liquidity in September will cap any upward pressure in Eonia and short-term rates driven by a fall in excess liquidity," said Alessandro Giansanti, a strategist at ING.

The euro overnight interbank lending rate edged down to 0.04 percent on Tuesday from 0.048 percent on Monday, staying near the upper end of the 2 to 5 basis point range it has traded in during the last month.

The McDonnells’ Friend Jonnie
By Amy Davidson
Credit Photograph by Jay Westcott/Reuters

watches “Another watch?” That is how Bob McDonnell, then the Governor of Virginia, responded when his wife, Maureen, gave him a Rolex watch one Christmas, according to the testimony of one of their sons. She’d already bought him a Seiko; the son offered his opinion that the Rolex seemed fake because it ticked instead of “rolled,” as he, a young man in his twenties, knew a Rolex should.

best replica watches

top brand watches The McDonnells are on trial for public corruption. They are charged with taking a hundred and sixty-five thousand dollars’ worth of gifts and “loans” from Jonnie Williams, Sr., in exchange for using the Governor’s office to help his nutraceutical business. The gifts included a full-length white leather coat and the Rolex watch, which, as the jurors saw, when it was passed to them as an exhibit, is inscribed “71st Governor of Virginia.” (One of the small blessings of this case is that the white leather coat was meant to be worn by Maureen, not Bob McDonnell.) And yet Bob McDonnell’s graceless response to the watch is at the heart of his defense. His lawyers have argued that the Governor’s marriage had so broken down that he and his wife were barely speaking—so how could they conspire? Maureen’s lawyers have said that Bob made her so sad that she got another man to buy things, so that she could feel like someone cared.

best replica watches “Jonnie Williams was larger than life to Maureen McDonnell,” her lawyer said. It wasn’t clear whether his stature was owing to his claim that Anatabloc, his supposed miracle product, had cured his wife’s precancerous thyroid condition, or because the first time he met Maureen he offered to get her an Oscar de la Renta dress for Virginia’s Inaugural Ball. “But, unlike the other man in her life, Jonnie Williams paid attention to Maureen McDonnell.” Her lawyer added that some people might find her relationship with Williams, on whom she had a “crush,” to be “inappropriate.” Williams, who is testifying against the McDonnells under a grant of immunity, said that there was no romance—it was only business, the business of getting the Governor to help his company. (The Washington Post has a good roundup of the testimony.)

cheap watches What the McDonnells’ lawyers are trying to do here is get through a narrow opening in Virginia’s ethics laws. It was not necessarily illegal for the Governor and his family to take gifts. And, to an extent, the Governor is supposed to promote Virginia products; his lawyer talked about how he also “eats Virginia ham” to explain why, at a luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion, there came to be sample packets of Anatabloc next to every place setting. But it is highly illegal for gifts to be exchanged for any “official act.” Both sides of the deal—the gifts and the acts—are fairly plainly there: the Governor’s office made calls and set up meetings for Williams, and Maureen flew to Florida to promote Anatabloc at a conference. The lawyers have to show that the items in Column A and in Column B have no connection—that the Governor’s business advocacy just coincided, unfortunately, with his wife’s dizzy infatuation. Hence the grumpy-Rolex-reception defense.

best swiss replica watches For the McDonnells, there are many problems with this. One is a photograph of Bob McDonnell smiling and pointing to the watch on his wrist, which one family member texted to Williams and which prosecutors showed in court on Thursday. It joins a photograph of Bob McDonnell grinning behind the wheel of Williams’s Ferrari, taken while he and Maureen were staying at Williams’s vacation house. (It was one of a number of trips that the family took at Williams’s expense, including one to Cape Cod that involved spa treatments and a clam bake.) He knew whose car it was. Maureen texted that picture to Williams, too; the same night, Bob e-mailed Virginia’s secretary of health, asking him to send deputies to a meeting with Maureen about Anatabloc.

He also knew that it was Williams’s account at the Kinloch Golf Club that he and his sons were billing rounds of golf, and gear from the pro shop, on, and that it was Williams who paid fifteen thousand dollars for the food at the McDonnells’ daughter Cailin’s wedding reception.

Cailin testified that Williams decided to give his “generous” gift after meeting her for ten minutes; she then added him to the invitation list. She cried on the stand when prosecutors showed pictures of her wedding and of her dress, for which she paid only forty-three dollars, a favor to her mother from the bridal shop. There was now, she said, “this dark cloud” over her perfect day.

More blatantly, it was Bob McDonnell who negotiated directly with Williams about fifty- and twenty-thousand-dollar loans meant to help a real-estate business that McDonnell was in with his sister. Late one night, McDonnell wrote to press Williams on getting it done, mentioning a brokerage account. Six minutes later, the Governor wrote to one of his aides, “Pls see me about anatabloc issues at VCU and UVA. Thx.” Williams testified that he’d made it clear to the McDonnells that getting the state’s public universities to run trials on Anatabloc was one of his priorities: “I know that he controls the medical schools, so I needed his help with the testing of this.”

Early on, Williams testified, he and Maureen had a late-night meeting, alone at the Governor’s Mansion. She talked to him about how she and Bob needed money badly; there were credit-card bills and the prospects of bankruptcy. She also said that she knew a lot about nutraceuticals. “The Governor says it’s O.K. for me to help you, but I need you to help me with this financial situation,” she said, according to Williams. He also testified that he didn’t want to simply take Maureen’s word for it about the Governor’s involvement, and insisted on talking to him directly: “He’s the breadwinner in the house, and I’m not writing his wife checks without him knowing about it.”

If there is a distance between the McDonnells, it may be in the practicality of their demands. Williams testified that he had to tell Maureen not to let the McDonnell sons drive the Ferrari; then he was pushed to buy other cars for the children. After Maureen asked Williams’s assistant to arrange for his private jet to pick up a daughter in Virginia Beach and two sons in Richmond, to fly to a resort that was also in Virginia, it had to be explained to her that jets aren’t suited to small hops. (“Can you recall any other time when a politician asked for the use of Mr. Williams’s plane to transport their children over a space of a one-and-a-half-hour drive?” a prosecutor asked the assistant. She did not.) All three flew from Richmond. Why did Maureen think it was a good idea for a governor to be wearing a Rolex in the first place, whoever bought it? Maybe it would look right in a post-office lobbying life, but not yet. One glimpses, in Maureen’s puzzlement about her situation, an assumption that power, money, and private planes naturally fit together, and that, if they don’t, something must be broken—perhaps a marriage.

There is something both appalling and poignant in what she chose to ask for from that obliging purveyor of miracle products. The shopping trip for the full-length white leather coat came after a state lawyer told her that she couldn’t take the Oscar de la Renta dress for the inauguration. She was very disappointed about that, Williams testified; it mattered so much what she, the First Lady of Virginia, wore to the ball.

Swatch Smartwatch To Debut In 2015, Compete With Apple iWatch
By   Jeff Stone @JeffStone500 j.stone@

Swatch, the world's biggest watchmaker, has long dismissed speculation that it would dip into the smartwatch area — until now.

omega watches Swatch Group AG (OTCMKTS:SWGAY) is expected to add a variety of smart features, including fitness information, to its 2015 lineup of watches in an attempt to stave off competition from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and other smartwatch producers.

omega watches on sale The world's biggest watchmaker has long dismissed speculation that it would dip into the smartwatch area, with Chief Executive Nick Hayek asserting that smartwatches simply don’t earn as many style points as Swatch watches do. But lately such boasts have been harder to defend, since the Swiss company's stock has plummeted amid rising demand for smartwatches. And now the Wall Street Journal reports that Swatch will roll out a line of digital watches by 2015.

replica omega seamaster Without specifying what technology will be included, a Swatch spokeswoman said the “usual features” will make up the fitness features, with speculation pointing to training calculators, pulse recorders and speed monitors.

newest omega watches “Nick Hayek is very concerned, for sure,” Mario Ortelli, an analyst at Bernstein, told the Journal. “But he can’t say that publicly.”

replica omega Forecasters have predicted that Apple’s iWatch, which is expected to be unveiled in September, will sell for $300 apiece, with an estimated 30 million to 60 million individual units sold over the product’s first year on the market. The highly anticipated smartwatch is expected to have more than 10 sensors and come in a variety of sizes to accommodate users with different needs.

omega watches outlet Swatch has been reluctant to offer the same options, instead relying on the style and status appeal of its high-end Omega and Breguet brands. Swatch’s midrange brands and its least expensive quartz watches generally sell for between $150 and $300, the anticipated price of an Apple iWatch.

She’s gonna getcha Manila Bulletin  –  Sun, Aug 3, 2014
Stories from the grapevine suggest that Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) commissioner Kim Jacinto Henares makes for an interesting guest. During social events, she would allegedly observe other guests and look at them from head to toe, and then check out what they’re wearing or what car they arrived in. Then, she would ask about these guests and what they do for a living.

replica watches In turn, the guests would keep their expensive jewelry and watches away from the prying eyes of the chief tax collector. Others say that some of the guests leave when they see even a strand of hair of the infamous commissioner.

swiss replica watches [caption id="attachment_169812" align="alignleft" width="162"] TOP SHOT Shooting hobbyist commissioner Kim Henares, holds a Tavor assault rifle replica. (Image by PINGGOT ZULUETA)[/caption]

high quality swiss replica watches “You know, I am by nature, very observant even before I became BIR commissioner,” Kim Henares says unapologetically. “In the first place, as far as I am concerned, I want everyone to be rich because if you’re rich, you pay taxes. As long as you pay the right taxes, then we don’t have a problem. If you want to flaunt your wealth, go ahead. But if you don’t pay the right taxes, then we have a problem.”

replica watches But unlike these guests, Henares is not as conscious of what she wears and drives in public. While other public officials drive top-of-the-line luxury cars and flaunt their Italian designer clothes, Henares leads a low-key lifestyle. Her no-fuss, straightforward demeanor says it all.

copy watches If one looks inside her handbag the most expensive item in it is her iPhone. In her closet is a variety of mid-tier clothing brands such as Lacoste, Zara, H&M, Giordano, and Marks & Spencer. She frequents Rockwell’s Powerplant mall—not to shop, mind you—but to dine at her favorite restaurants and tea salon (Kulinarya, Franco’s, and TWG). She favors classic Filipino cuisine like tuyo, dilis, kare-kare, and bagoong. And her latest splurge to date? A 16-digit calculator!

swiss Mechanical movement replica watches “I don’t really shop; I just walk around and eat. I seldom go out. When I shop, I’m not very particular with labels, it’s the fit and the design that count. We don’t lead a luxurious life. We have a normal life,” says Henares, who is wearing her usual work pants, paired today with a yellow and white-striped top under a black cardigan, accessorized with a multi-chain necklace.

She says that there’s nothing wrong with living First World lives in a Third World country, but these people need to understand how others may feel about it. Being generous is one thing but showing off is another.

“Actually it’s their right to lead their lives but of course, we have to be sensitive to the people around us. I always say, people who are actually really rich are the ones who are low key. The nouveau riche, they are really shoving it in your face. They are the ones who are matapobre. What’s important is breeding. Life is a cycle, you can go up, you can go down. Today, you might be the richest person, tomorrow, you might be the poorest. You cannot bring the material things to your grave,” she cautions.

Her only luxury? “Time.” For a busy public official, she doesn’t get a lot of rest. Sleep, along with an uninterrupted day, is what this lady considers her indulgence. After all, she has one of the most difficult jobs in government.

THE TOUGHEST LADY IN THE GOVERNMENT

Last August 1, BIR celebrated its 110th anniversary and they have a lot to celebrate. Since she was appointed by the President, the revenue agency has been breaking records in its year-on-year collection. In 2012, they broke the P1 trillion mark, collecting a total of P1.017. Last year, the collection further increased to P1.217 trillion. The government’s ambitious target for this year is P1.456 trillion.

A graduate of accounting at De La Salle University; Law at Ateneo de Manila University; and Masters of Law at Georgetown, she models her methods after the United States’ Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Her vision is for BIR to be like the American agency that is feared yet followed by its people.

Despite the record numbers, some citizens are clueless about taxes while others don’t care to pay at all. Henares says that out of 10 Filipinos, about six don’t know how to pay taxes and half of the remaining four don’t pay the right taxes.

In fact, some people use ridiculous excuses just to avoid paying their dues. For instance, some celebrities declare their “talent fees” as money that went straight to a foundation (bogus NGOs perhaps?). Still others make it appear that their money was “donated” to them like they were charity cases. And, of course, the multiple-TIN-numbers-I-did-not-know-about excuse.

The bureau has filed a total 270 cases against tax evaders but she wouldn’t reveal who the biggest tax evaders are. “Just look at the list of people we filed cases against,” she says. And if it were up to her, she will put all tax evaders straight to jail!

“Pay your tax correctly so you don’t have to worry about it, because if you don’t pay your taxes correctly and we catch you, you will be paying more than the 32 percent tax,” she cautions. “There’s surcharge and interest, so you will have to pay more and you will lose more. That’s the lesson and that’s the reason you have to pay the right taxes.”

For Henares, absolutely everybody has to pay taxes, no matter how small or big their income is, whether you’re a tiangge vendor or one of the world’s top athletes, because nobody is above the law.

“I’m just doing my job, there’s nothing personal. First, whatever I do is required by law,” she says.

And if you were to ask her, government’s expenditures for the past four years has been worth it regardless of the endless corruption controversies (PDAF and DAP anyone?). It is where she thinks tax should be, for the benefit of the people.

“Actually where we are putting it is we’re investing in our people. Tax money is really going to support the less fortunate members of our society, trying to make them come out of poverty. Like we invested a lot on our health, education, and infrastructure. I think this is just the right investment. And as taxpayers, they should know where their money goes.”
